Time difference between home and Spain or Portugal: now, this week and in March
Short answer, checked 24 October 2026: from Sun 25 Oct until Sun 1 Nov the gap between the US or Canada and Spain or Portugal is 1 hour smaller than usual, because Europe sets its clocks back on 25 Oct and the US and Canada only on 1 Nov. New York to Madrid is 5 h on Wed 28 Oct and 6 h from Mon 2 Nov. The same happens in spring: the US moves on Sun 14 Mar 2027, Europe on Sun 28 Mar 2027.

The mismatch windows
- Sun 25 Oct 2026Europe (Spain, Portugal, UK and the rest of the EU) sets clocks back one hour. EU rule: summer time ends on the last Sunday of October (Directive 2000/84/EC).
- Sun 1 Nov 2026The US and Canada (Ontario checked) set clocks back one hour: first Sunday of November. For one week the gap to Europe is 1 hour smaller than usual.
- Sun 14 Mar 2027The US and Canada move clocks forward: second Sunday of March (8 Mar is a Monday in 2027, so the date is 14 Mar). The gap is 1 hour smaller again.
- Sun 28 Mar 2027Europe moves clocks forward: last Sunday of March. The usual gap returns.
Both windows: the gap shrinks by 1 hour for the cities that change on one side only. Cities in places that do not change clocks (see below) move against Europe on the EU dates only.
Places that do not change clocks (verified)
- Mexico. Mexico ended daylight saving time nationwide on 30 Oct 2022 (the border area keeps a seasonal schedule). Mexico City is on a fixed offset, so its gap to Spain changes on the EU dates only.
- Brazil. Brazil ended its hora de verão by Decreto 9.772 of 25 Apr 2019. São Paulo is on a fixed offset, so its gap to Portugal and Spain changes on the EU dates only.
- Russia. Russia returned to permanent winter time in October 2014, so Moscow does not change clocks.
For Turkey, Argentina, India, China, Ukraine, the UK and Australia we did not check the rules by hand. The tool above reads them from your browser's IANA time zone database, so it shows what your device knows.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is New York to Madrid 5 hours this week and not 6? Europe set its clocks back on Sun 25 Oct 2026, but the US only does so on Sun 1 Nov 2026. Until then New York is on UTC-4 and Madrid on UTC+1, a 5 hour gap. From 1 Nov the gap is the usual 6 hours.
- When do the clocks change in the US and Europe in 2026 and 2027? Europe: Sun 25 Oct 2026 and Sun 28 Mar 2027 (last Sunday of October and March, Directive 2000/84/EC). US: Sun 1 Nov 2026 and Sun 14 Mar 2027 (first Sunday of November, second Sunday of March, NIST). Canada (Ontario) uses the same US rule (NRC Canada).
- Do Mexico, Brazil and Russia change their clocks? No. Mexico ended daylight saving time in October 2022 (border area excepted), Brazil in 2019 and Russia in 2014. Their gap to Spain and Portugal still changes by 1 hour on the EU dates.
- What is a good time to call between New York and Madrid? With a 6 hour gap, 8:00 to 16:00 in New York is 14:00 to 22:00 in Madrid, so that is the shared window if you both stay inside 8:00 to 22:00. With the 5 hour gap of this week it is 8:00 to 17:00 in New York. The tool works it out for any pair and date.

Checked 24 October 2026 against the sources below. The NRC Canada page carries a notice that some information on it changes after 1 Nov 2026, so recheck Canadian rules there. The gap shown by the tool comes from your device's time zone data, not from numbers stored on this page.
