Giving Tuesday: Tue 1 Dec 2026, and how to start volunteering as a newcomer

GivingTuesday 2026 is on Tuesday 1 December, the Tuesday after US Thanksgiving (26 November). It is a day of giving, and a good moment to ask a local group if they need hands. Below: one national volunteering page per country and a short guide for starting without much of the local language. Volunteering is unpaid. Checked on 24 October 2026.

The date

  1. Tue 1 Dec 2026The GivingTuesday site shows "GivingTuesday - Dec 1, 2026" in its menu. US Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November 2026, so the Tuesday after is 1 December.
  2. Country chaptersWe did not find a separate 2026 date from any national chapter in Spain, Portugal, France, Germany or the Netherlands. Treat 1 December as the global date and check a local group's own page for what it plans.

National volunteering pages (opened 24 Oct 2026)

  1. SpainPlataforma del Voluntariado de España. A national network of volunteering organisations, not a ministry. Its page is titled "Haz Voluntariado, cuida el mundo" and has a section for people who want to get involved.
  2. PortugalPortugal Voluntário. The Portuguese government news page we opened names it as the platform that connects people who want to volunteer with organisations. The site credits CASES.
  3. FranceJe veux aider. Described on its page as the public volunteering platform of the Réserve Civique, on a .gouv.fr domain. Open to "tout citoyen ou résident régulier de plus de 16 ans". Some missions carry the tag "Idéale pour débuter"; activities include translation and learning French.
  4. GermanyBBE, Bundesnetzwerk Bürgerschaftliches Engagement. A national network for civic engagement with about 299 member organisations, run by a non-profit office in Berlin. It is not a government site and not a search tool; its member directory is the closest thing. We did not find one federal portal we could open and confirm.
  5. NetherlandsVereniging VrijwilligerswerkNL. The national association for volunteering (nov.nl redirects here) with nearly 400 member organisations and a directory for finding volunteer work. It is not a government site and the pages are in Dutch only.

Starting with little of the local language

  1. Say it in one lineWrite or say that you are new, which language you speak, and that you can help with simple tasks.
  2. Ask for tasks with little talkingSorting, packing, setting up, serving, cleaning and outdoor work need few words. Say if you would like those.
  3. Start smallAsk for one afternoon first. Many groups let you try before you commit.
  4. Use a translator for the first messageWrite in the local language with a translation tool and add your own language below so the group can reply.
  5. No paymentVolunteering is unpaid. Ask whether travel or meals are covered, and do not expect a wage or a job offer from it.

Questions to ask the group

  1. What would I do?Ask for the tasks and the hours in writing.
  2. What language is needed?Ask if you can help with another language or a buddy.
  3. Who is my contact?Ask for one named person and a place to meet.
  4. Is there cover?Ask about insurance and whether expenses are paid.
  5. Is it allowed with my permit? Some residence permits set conditions. Check the official immigration site and see /volunteer/ in this kit.
