Santa Lucia in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Italy: Sunday 13 December 2026

Short answer: on 13 December the Nordic countries celebrate Lucia, a festival of light in the darkest weeks of the year. A young person in a white robe with a red sash and a crown of candles leads a choir through a dark church or school hall, and everyone eats saffron buns. In 2026 the 13th is a Sunday. It is not a public holiday, so the normal Sunday shop rules apply. Events are local, so check your church, school or town listing.

What Santa Lucia is

A saint and a festival of light

13 December is the feast of Saint Lucy of Syracuse, who died in 304 AD. Her name is linked to the Latin word for light, and in the Nordic winter her day became a celebration of candles.

What you will see

Lucia wears a white robe, a red sash and a crown of candles (in schools and many churches, battery candles). Her attendants carry candles too, and the choir sings songs such as Sankta Lucia. Afterwards there are lussekatter (saffron buns with raisins), pepparkakor (ginger biscuits) and coffee or mulled wine.
