What's closed 1-6 January 2027: public holidays by country

Short answer, checked on 27 October 2026: Friday 1 Jan 2027 is a public holiday in every country below. Saturday 2 Jan and Sunday 3 Jan are a normal weekend. In Scotland the 2 January bank holiday moves to Monday 4 Jan 2027 (GOV.UK). Wednesday 6 Jan 2027 (Epiphany) is a public holiday in Spain, Italy, Austria, Sweden and Croatia, and in Baden-Württemberg and Bayern in Germany. We list only what we could read in an official source. "Usually closed" is a general pattern, not a promise: opening depends on the shop, the town and the contract, so check locally. We give no opening hours. This page covers 1-6 January only; for 24 Dec to 31 Dec see the Christmas and New Year guide.

The Scottish bank holiday falls on a Saturday. GOV.UK lists the substitute day as Monday 4 Jan 2027. mygov.scot states the rule (a weekday becomes the bank holiday instead) but did not show 2027 dates when we read it: confirm on gov.scot / mygov.scot. A bank holiday is not a legal right to a day off: your contract decides.

Not on this page

Portugal: 6 January is not on the statutory list in the page we cite in the Christmas guide; we did not re-read the law for this page. Finland, Poland, Greece and Cyprus also mark Epiphany, but we could not read an official source for them, so we list nothing. France, the Netherlands and Ireland: 6 Jan is not a holiday in the sources on the Christmas guide.
